From a Teacher's Diary...

When you feel so SPECIAL.....

We all know praise is an effective tool for motivation. When someone praises you It can bring outstanding change in your behaviour. Being an educator I found many teachers praised their students for continuous efforts they made toward their goal. It is very obvious and common because a teacher always wants to bring out the best in his/ her students. A teachers has to lead by example, and when you are a teacher educator it could be quite challenging for you because you creates thousand of teachers in your whole career so you will have to always been an excellent example to be followed by your prospective teachers. 

Today I want to give a big Thank You to all my amazing students who always motivate me to do my best. Teaching is a selfless profession; it is not just a job of 10 to 5 or just a part of work only for salary. A teacher is always ready to serve his/her students, to cater their needs in the classroom without any return gift or Bonus for this. The bonding when students connect to a teacher is always awesome.The happiness can not be expressed in words when you are remembered by your old students who have been passed out from the institution still they send wishes on teachers day.Today I am feeling so blessed and fortunate for coming into this profession. I want to say a big thank you to all my students for make me feel so blessed and honoured.

Profile of a good Commerce Teacher 

•American Commission on Teacher Education, “The quality of nation depends upon the quality of its citizens. The quality of its citizens depends- not exclusively but in critical measure-upon the quality of their education. The quality of their education depends, more than upon any other single  factor, upon the quality of their teacher.”

•As the Ministry of Education document Challenge of Education: A Policy Perspective (1985) has mentioned, “Teacher performance is the most crucial input in the field of education. Whatever policies may be laid down, in the ultimate analysis, these have to be interpreted and implemented by the teachers as much through their personal example as through teaching-learning processes”.

Role of Commerce Teacher in the Classroom

•The role of the present day teacher has become very challenging and complex because of following reasons:

  (1) There is the explosion of knowledge and radical changes are occurring in the context areas of all disciplines- humanities, sciences and social sciences.

  (2) The teacher has to keep in view the new concepts like individualized instruction, micro-teaching, programmed learning, teaching machines, team- teaching, Art integrated and joyful learning etc.

  (3) The teacher had to make the proper use of various means of multi media technology.

  (4) The teacher has to control an inclusive classroom with various types of children who come from different socio-economic groups with different I.Q., abilities and interests.

 (5) teacher’s expectations and attitude towards  students should be equally for every student. The attitude of a teacher to life has to be positive, democratic secular and socialist.

  (6) The present teacher is supposed to have a broad and integrated view of the subjects he teaches. He cannot afford to teach his subject in isolation.

(7) The present teacher is expected to be up-date and conscious of various explosions and innovations not only in nation but also world wide .

Qualities of a Commerce Teacher

•Scholarship-  Scholarship in commerce and accountancy is the minimum requirement to start with. Sound knowledge of both the subject is very necessary to him/her. He should be master in commerce.

•Professional Training- Teaching is a profession and teacher must be perennial student. He/she must be B.Ed. / master/ Philosopher in his/her subject.

•The commerce teacher must have up to date knowledge and understanding of the present banking system, industry, and commerce.

Personality- A good personality is the essential requirement for every teacher so as for a commerce teacher. Three main aspects of personality which emphasis directly on personality are;

1.Physical Aspect: Personal appearance (dress, facial expression, mannerism, personal cleanliness), voice, language, health (physical and mental.

2. Passive Virtues: Friendliness, sympathy and understanding, sincerity, tact, fairness, self control, Patience.

3. Executive Abilities- Self confidence, Initiative, organizing ability,  directive ability etc. 

Other Qualities

Good Character- To maintain  the good conduct and good character is very important for any teacher to have good impact on the character building of students. Goo teachers should always treat every students  with respect, he should avoid partiality and favoritism.

Aptitude in teaching Profession- A positive aptitude for the profession is required for a teacher without it teacher can negatively effect the students. Students wont take interest in their subject.

Good knowledge of teaching procedure-  To draw the attention and to develop the interest of students it is very important to have good knowledge of teaching procedure.

Trained by using various teaching methods and techniques- A teacher should be able to use various teaching methods and techniques according to the content and subject matter. Best teacher always tries to involve his all students in activities.

Able to develop and use instructional Material- A commerce teacher should be able to prepare various audio and visual materials for his/her subject to make the subject more effective and meaningful.

Good evaluator of students’ progress- ‘A tree is known by its fruits’. Values, skills, attendance and transformation in the knowledge of students can only reflect the success of a teacher. So, he/ she should be aware with different types of test and evaluation methods to know the strength and potential of students. 

Happy and well adjusted- A commerce teacher should be well adjusted with colleagues, students and other person. A commerce teacher must be humorous in the class to make the classroom environment light and friendly.

Appropriate knowledge of commerce equipments and machines- It is very important to handle different types of commerce equipments and machines without it a teacher wont be able to instruct his students effectively. He should also be able to refer good reference books of his subject for better understanding.

Organize and supervise co-curricular activities- According to need and interest of students a commerce teacher should conduct different types of co-curricular activities in the class to develop various skills in the students. he may conduct school exhibition, commerce club, commerce managing different surveys and excursion of different industries. 

Classroom Management- Classroom management can be a major issue for beginning teachers. A trained teacher can only manage the class effectively. He/She should be able to control the students and classroom situation. Providing a safe, comfortable learning environment and building  students’ self esteem is his/ her priority.

Habit of study- For maintain the consistent updated education of commerce and interest it is necessary to develop the habit of study.

Create Interest- “Interest is the mother of the attention .” Best teachers make the class interesting and relevant to the students. Good teachers work hard to make their material relevant. 

Problems Faced by Commerce Teacher

•Unpopularity of commerce at competitive national examinations.

•In many states mostly arts and science students get preference for teaching commerce graduates are not even eligible for teacher training courses, such as B.Ed.

•High student low teacher ratio.

•Lack of proper infrastructure for commerce department.

•Inadequate teaching aids like commerce lab, Machines, equipment and  CTV-Video films etc.

•It is more content oriented rather than skill and practice oriented.
